Breast asymmetry is a condition that affects many women.
The breasts are an important aesthetic component of a woman's body, associated with femininity, sexuality, and motherhood and, as such, it's easy to see how asymmetries can have a significant impact on their quality of life and self-esteem.
One of the reasons why so many women now choose to have breast implants is precisely to correct breast asymmetry.
Women who feel physically and psychologically disturbed by significant differences in the volume, size or shape of their breasts tend to seek medical advice for a careful assessment and, if indicated and feasible, corrective surgery.
The important thing is that women feel good, more confident, and secure with their bodies.
What is Breast Asymmetry?
The human body is not completely symmetrical and therefore women's breasts are not completely identical either.
Breast asymmetry occurs when one breast is different from the other in terms of size or volume, shape, positioning or has different characteristics.
Most of the time, these differences are unnoticeable or go unnoticed, causing no discomfort in a woman's day-to-day life or in her self-esteem.
The problem arises when these asymmetries are so significant that they considerably affect a woman's life and self-image, leading to feelings of embarrassment and dissatisfaction with her appearance. Some asymmetries are so obvious that they can be noticed even when wearing baggier clothes.
But there are women who, even with less obvious breast asymmetries, feel insecure and dissatisfied with their bodies.
Types of breast asymmetry
The volume of one breast may be greater than the other. One breast may have insufficient volume (breast hypotrophy). The skin can vary in tension and lead to one breast being firmer than the other, and the location of the nipples can also be different.
Many women do not develop their breast tissue fully or symmetrically at puberty, due to various factors. In any case, breast asymmetry is only definitive after puberty, when a woman's body is fully developed.
A very pronounced breast asymmetry is tubular, a deformity of the breast that makes it small, lacking adequate growth of glandular tissue and remaining constricted. The skin of the malformed breast is often restricted or constricted around the developing glandular tissue, resulting in a tubular or elongated shape. This type of breast asymmetry in young teenagers can be very distressing, as it interferes with the development of a healthy body image and self-confidence.
It can also happen that one or both breasts are positioned more laterally, more towards the centre, or one is lower than the other.
Thoracic deformities that alter the anatomy of the anterior thoracic base can also affect the appearance, position, projection, and orientation of the breasts.
Breast asymmetries can thus originate from:
- Hormonal changes;
- Breastfeeding;
- Heredity;
- Breast diseases;
- The appearance of nodules;
- Traumatic injuries,
- Thoracic deformity;
- Complications such as capsular contractures (a possible complication of breast augmentation);
- Poorly performed breast surgery.
Is it possible to correct breast asymmetry?
Breast asymmetry can be corrected. It is often corrected by breast augmentation, as implants make it possible to enlarge one or both breasts in different proportions, to make them as similar as possible in terms of size, shape and position.
However, the type of plastic surgery recommended will differ depending on the type of asymmetry involved.
A fully personalised treatment plan should therefore be developed for each case, considering individual needs and goals. Depending on the degree of asymmetry, breast augmentation, breast lift or breast reduction may be recommended, or a combination of procedures.
In cases where there is marked sagging of one breast and a lack of volume compared to the other breast, a mastopexy with implants of different sizes is recommended. If there is any discrepancy in the projection of the breast, it is also necessary to place prostheses with different projections.
In some cases, it may be necessary to remove some excess skin or breast tissue to reduce the size of a breast, to help symmetrize the result, or to reposition one or both breasts.
Another procedure used to correct breast asymmetry is the transfer of fat from one area of the body to the breasts to improve their size, shape and to achieve greater breast symmetry.
In the end, the common goal of all surgeries to correct breast asymmetry is to create a harmonious and balanced appearance through the similarity between the breasts, improving patients' self-confidence and body contour.
WHEN SHOULD I HAVE PLASTIC SURGERY?
Women who have one or more asymmetries and are uncomfortable with this condition, and who have reached body maturity with full breast development, can have breast correction surgery.
To undergo surgery, women must be healthy and not breastfeeding.
In cases of breast asymmetry due to pathologies such as breast cancer, the woman must be assessed by a specialist doctor before undergoing plastic surgery.
The main aim of this type of surgery is to correct breast asymmetry, leaving the two breasts as similar in size and shape as possible and promoting a natural look.
The aim is for women to feel more confident and secure, boosting their self-esteem.
