Gynecomastia: the price of this male breast reduction surgery in Portugal raise questions? We will try to clarify them!
Gynecomastia is the name given to male breast enlargement. Although breast development is associated with women, there are men who also develop a kind of breast, a situation that can cause great physical and emotional discomfort.
Gynecomastia is not a disease, it's a physical condition.
Male breasts can have different origins. It can arise from an excess of mammary glands or from excess fat localized in the chest area. The latter is also known as pseudo-gynecomastia. In either case, it can also be characterized by excess skin or sagging of the breast.
Gynecomastia can also be unilateral or bilateral, depending on whether it occurs in just one or both men’s breasts.
Male breast reduction surgery
The surgery to correct male breast enlargement is aimed at reducing the size and remodelling the male breast.
Surgical treatment for gynecomastia can be carried out using two techniques, either alone or in combination: liposuction and breast reduction surgery. Liposuction is the technique used when the patient's breast volume is of an adipose nature. Reduction surgery, on the other hand, should be carried out when there is an excess of mammary glands.
The procedure lasts between 1 and 2 hours and is performed under sedation with local anaesthesia and on an outpatient basis or with a 24-hour hospital stay if necessary.
The average recovery time is 2 weeks.
cirurgia destinada a corrigir o aumento mamário masculino tem como objetivo a redução do tamanho e remodelação da mama masculina.
32% of men affected
This condition is more common than you might think, affecting around 32 percent of men. In adolescents, this figure is even higher, as 65 percent of boys are affected.
In 75% of cases, gynecomastia is bilateral, i.e. it affects both breasts.
Gynecomastia can affect men of all ages, although it is more common in the neonatal period, in adolescents, and in men after the andropause, phases associated with decreases in testosterone levels.
What is the price of gynecomastia surgery?
Currently in Portugal, the average price of surgery to correct gynecomastia can vary between €3.000 and €6.000.
However, each patient is unique, as is their situation. That's why the price of this procedure is assessed by the plastic surgeon on a case-by-case basis. After the medical assessment consultation, you will be given an exact quote for gynecomastia treatment.
The cost of the operation depends on whether you have excess fat, a mammary gland, or both.
Other factors that can influence the cost of surgery to treat gynecomastia are the greater or lesser complexity of the operation, the reputation and qualifications of the chosen surgeon, and the clinic where the procedure will be carried out.
Pay special attention when selecting a cosmetic surgery clinic: always choose a place with a good reputation, that uses the best surgical techniques and that guarantees your safety.
You should be aware that some practices offer prices below the market average to attract as many patients as possible. However, very low prices can also indicate that something important, such as post-surgical follow-up, is not included.
Never jeopardize your health just to get a lower price. Price goes far beyond value.
If you suffer from gynecomastia and you are interested in having a male breast reduction surgery, you should book an assessment appointment to find out the exact cost of your treatment.

Does health insurance cover gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia corrective surgery is considered a surgery for purely aesthetic purposes and as such is not covered by health insurance.
However, once again, each case must be analysed individually, and there are situations in which health insurance may cover full or partial payment. For example, if the patient has excessive growth of the mammary gland or there are criteria for possible malignancy.
Can I pay in instalments?
Most plastic surgery clinics offer the possibility of paying in instalments.
You can also take out a credit by applying for a financial plan or paying by credit card. Loans for cosmetic procedures are generally considered personal loans. These should be taken up with the bank or credit institution.
When should I pay for the surgery?
If you have not requested payment in instalments or taken out a personal loan, the patient who is going to have surgery to correct gynecomastia must make full payment before the procedure takes place.
