What is Mia® ?
Mia® is a new breast augmentation technique, suitable for women looking to improve the volume, shape and proportion of their breasts with a natural result, no scars on the breast and faster recovery.
At the LMR Clinic, we are pioneers in Portugal in introducing this innovative approach to breast augmentation. Mia® was developed for women looking for a fuller, more harmonious breast.
Unlike a traditional breast augmentation, Mia® favours a less invasive approach, with small hidden incisions in the armpit, breast tissue is preserved and recovery tends to be quicker.
Patients can resume normal activity the next day and sports activities after 15 days.
Who is it for?
Mia® may be indicated for women who:
- want to increase their breast volume;
- feel a loss of volume after pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss or ageing;
- want a natural breast augmentation result;
- want to improve small asymmetries;
- don't want scars directly on the breast;
- value a faster recovery and a less invasive approach.
The indication must always be confirmed at a doctor's appointment in Lisbon, Cascais or Porto.
How it's made the technique?
Because no two women's physical structures are the same and because women don't all want the same result, the different ranges of breast implants allow the plastic surgeons at the LMR Plastic Surgery Clinic to adapt the choice of implants to the results each woman wants to achieve.
Mia® is realised through a transaxillary approach, i.e, through the armpit. Through small incisions, the space is created for implant placement used, respecting the natural structures of the breast.
The procedure can be carried out with local anaesthesia and sedation in selected cases, although the anaesthetic decision always depends on the doctor's assessment and the patient's safety.
What's it like recovery?
Recovery tends to be faster and more comfortable than in more invasive breast surgeries, but it is still a surgical procedure.
In the first few days, there may be some discomfort, tension, oedema or tenderness in the axillary area.
Patients can resume normal activity the next day and sports activities after 15 days.
Security and results
Mia® was developed with a focus on security, at naturalness and tissue preservation.
Clinical studies available show favourable results in terms of recovery, stability and low complication rate associated with the technique.
However, like any surgical procedure, it involves risks and should only be decided on after an individualised medical assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions about
Mia® - Minimally Invasive Breast Augmentation
What is Mia®?
Mia® is a minimally invasive breast augmentation technique, performed using an axillary approach, which improves the volume and proportion of the breast with a natural, discreet and proportional result.
Is Mia® a surgery?
Yes. Mia® is a minimally invasive surgical procedure. Although it is less invasive than a traditional breast augmentation in selected cases, it must be performed by certified surgeons and in an appropriate setting.
Is Mia® the same as breast augmentation?
No. Traditional breast augmentation allows for a greater variety of volumes and approaches. Mia® is indicated for women looking for a more subtle harmonisation, generally with mild to moderate augmentation, hidden scars in the armpit and a faster recovery.
How many sizes can I increase with Mia®?
In many cases, Mia® allows an increase of around 1 to 2 cup sizes. The result depends on the initial anatomy, the quality of the tissue, the patient's goal and the medical assessment.
Does Mia® leave a scar on the breast?
There are no scars directly on the breast. The small incisions are made in the armpit fold and are discreetly hidden there. Like any incision, they can leave a scar in the armpit, the evolution of which depends on individual healing.
Is Mia® done under general anaesthesia?
Mia® can be performed with tumescent local anaesthesia and sedation in selected cases. However, the anaesthetic decision always depends on the medical assessment in consultation and the patient's safety.
How long does the procedure take?
The Mia® Experience is designed to be a fast and minimally invasive surgical experience. Even so, the total duration depends on the preparation, anaesthesia, technique, immediate recovery and individual conditions of each patient.
Is recovery painful?
Recovery tends to be more comfortable than with more invasive breast surgery, but there may be discomfort, tension, oedema or tenderness in the first few days. Medication and post-operative care are defined by the medical team and indicated to the patient.
When can I get back into the routine?
The return to routine is progressive and depends on individual evolution. Many patients resume simple activities within a few days, but all deadlines must be confirmed by the medical team.
When can I return to exercise?
The return to exercise should be gradual and authorised by your plastic surgeon. Intense exercise, impact and upper limb training should be avoided in the first few weeks or until advised by your doctor.
Does Mia® alter breast sensitivity?
The technique was developed with a focus on preserving breast tissue and sensitivity. In the 3-year clinical study, no changes in breast or nipple sensitivity were reported. Nevertheless, temporary or persistent changes in sensitivity are a possible risk in any breast surgery.
Does it correct asymmetries?
It can improve small asymmetries in selected cases. More marked asymmetries may require other surgical techniques or a combined approach.
Does this procedure replace a mastopexy?
Not necessarily. In cases of mild sagging, it can help improve shape and fill. When there is significant breast sagging or excess skin, mastopexy may be more appropriate.
Does the result look natural?
Yes, that's one of the main aims of Mia®: to create a natural, proportionate and discreet result, avoiding an artificial or overly obvious appearance.
Can I take Mia® after breastfeeding?
Yes, many women seek breast harmonisation after pregnancy and breastfeeding, due to loss of volume or changes in breast shape. The indication should be assessed in consultation, ideally after weight stabilisation and the end of breastfeeding.
Is Mia® safe?
Mia® was developed with a focus on safety and tissue preservation. However, it is a surgical procedure and involves risks. Safety depends on the correct indication, the experience of the medical team and compliance with pre- and post-operative recommendations.
What are the risks?
Despite being minimally invasive, Mia® is a surgical procedure. There may be risks such as haematoma, seroma, infection, asymmetry, changes in sensitivity, unfavourable healing, poor positioning of the implant, capsular contracture, rupture, the need for surgical revision or dissatisfaction with the result.
How much does breast harmonisation with Mia® cost?
The price of Mia® depends on the medical assessment, indication, materials, surgical context and plan defined for each patient. The budget is presented after consultation.
Where can I do Mia® in Portugal?
Clínica LMR is a pioneer in Portugal in the introduction of Mia®. The assessment consultation allows us to confirm whether this technique is right for you and to define the safest plan.
