What is Liposuction?
Liposuction, commonly called liposculpture, lipoplasty, lipectomy or just lipo, is a surgical technique for removing unwanted fat deposits in specific areas of the body, including the face, neck, upper limbs, torso, abdomen, gluteal region, hips and lower limbs.
Characteristics of ideal candidates for liposuction
The best candidates for lipo generally have the following characteristics:
-
Healthy and stable weight;
-
Fat deposits in specific areas of the body;
-
Firm skin with good elasticity;
-
Healthy;
-
Realistic expectations.
In which areas of the body
can liposuction be performed?
Lipo can be performed on any area where there is localised fat that bothers you. The most common areas are:
- Abdomen
- Flanks
- Back
- Culottes
- Inner thigh
- Arms and bra pads;
- “Mount of Venus” (pubic area)
- “Banana rolls” (localised fat in the lower part of the buttocks)
- “Jowls”
- Male breast (gynaecomastia)
other indications of Liposuction
This procedure is usually carried out for aesthetic reasons, but it can also be done to treat certain conditions:
Lipedema
Hereditary and chronic dysfunction, characterised by an increase in fatty tissue, which usually affects the legs and arms.
Liposuction can be performed to reduce swelling, discomfort and pain.
Gynaecomastia
A condition that affects males and is characterised by an excess of skin, fat and mammary gland, either unilateral or bilateral.
Isolated liposuction is performed when the increase in breast volume is due to fat accumulation.
Lipodystrophy
Abnormal distribution of body fat, causing asymmetries and disproportions.
This surgery can improve body appearance by creating a better distribution of fat.
Lipomas
Benign skin tumours made up of fat cells. This procedure is a treatment option for some cases.
What is liposuction? can't treat?
Sagging
Sagging skin will not readapt to the new contours and, in these cases, additional surgical techniques may be required to remove the excess skin.
Irregularities
When contour irregularities are caused by structures other than fat, they cannot be corrected using this technique.
Cellulite
This procedure does not improve the appearance of an orange peel, it only treats areas of localised fat.
Excess weight
Lipo is not a slimming treatment. Overweight patients are not suitable for surgery.
Procedure
of Liposuction
Medical advice: the first step of your liposuction consultation, é a detailed assessment of the area you wish to treat, your state of health and your lifestyle. This will allow us to design a completely personalised plan for you;
Simulation with Vectra 3D: in some cases, Vectra 3D XT allows you to create a simulation of the result that can be achieved with this procedure;
Detailed explanationDuring the consultation, a personalised treatment plan will be presented and the risks, care before and after surgery and the results you can expect will be explained;
BudgetAfter the medical consultation, you will be given an exact quote. The cost or price of liposuction depends on the areas to be treated and the amount of fat to be removed; the price also fluctuates if the surgery is combined with other procedures.
Type of Anaesthesia
This procedure can be carried out under local anaesthesia, local anaesthesia and sedation, general anaesthesia or epidural anaesthesia, depending on the areas to be treated, the combination of procedures, the characteristics of each patient and what the anaesthetist decides is safest for them.
The scars of Liposuction
One of the issues that most worries patients who want to have surgery is the appearance of the scar. Liposuction scars are very small and discreet (around 3mm) and are usually hidden in the natural folds of the body.
Myths and facts
ABOUT LIPOSUCTION
Myth: lipo slims you down;
Fact: lipo is not a slimming method. People indicated for surgery must have a stable weight and some localised fat that they want to remove.
Myth: liposuction treats cellulite;
Fact: liposuction does not treat cellulite.
Myth: after liposculpture you can't put on any more weight;
Fact: to maintain an excellent result after liposculpture, it is essential to maintain a stable weight, because if you gain weight, you will gain weight again, although the distribution of fat will be different.
Myth: all clinics can carry out the procedure, even in consulting rooms;
Fact: surgery should only be carried out by duly qualified plastic surgeons, who can be easily identified on lists available for consultation at Medical Association or in Portuguese Society of Plastic Surgery. Procedures should be carried out in properly certified clinics with the necessary safety conditions and never in consulting rooms.
Myth: it's a very dangerous surgery.
FactIt's a dangerous surgery if it's not carried out by a plastic surgeon or if it's carried out in poor conditions. The vast majority of the fatal cases we hear about in the media have occurred at the hands of doctors without any kind of qualification to perform the surgery and in clinics without safe conditions.
Mythcan be used as a substitute for physical exercise.
Fact: although it has similar results to physical exercise in terms of reducing fat mass, it doesn't compare to the benefits of physical exercise, especially in terms of improving the cardiovascular profile.
Myth: Laser lipo, Vibro Lipo, Ultrasonic Lipo are much better than lipo.
Fact: according to scientific studies published in specialised journals, classic liposuction has identical results to other techniques. What makes the difference is not the device used, but the plastic surgeon who operates it. A careful plastic surgeon who knows the limits and uses appropriate cannulas for each specific area is undoubtedly what makes the difference between a good result and a bad one. Devices are available to plastic surgeons in well-equipped clinics and in many cases they optimise surgical time, although they are not concretely reflected in the results. There is a great deal of marketing behind the use of different terms associated with liposuction that don't correspond to relevant differences. In the same way, terms such as hydro lipo, mini lipo, safe lipo, etc, refer to basic techniques that all plastic surgeons know and which are used to publicise the technique.
Myth: Liposculpture is not liposuction.
Fact: liposculpture is another marketing term coined to refer to liposuction in which a person's own fat is used to inject it into another area where there is a deficiency (e.g. depression, loss of volume, etc.). Although the term liposculpture has some charisma because it evokes something related to art, it is still a liposuction technique.
Myth: this surgery is only for women.
Fact: this surgery is performed on both men and women, with excellent results in both cases, provided they have a clear indication for the procedure.
Liposuction surgery
step-by-step
Marking the standing patient
The appointments for the surgery are made with the patient standing, before being anaesthetised, so that the areas of the body to be treated can be correctly visualised.
Sedation
Sedation is injected by the anaesthetist and then, when the patient is asleep, local anaesthesia is administered.
Disinfection and placement of surgical drapes
The area to be treated is disinfected to reduce the risk of infection. Operating drapes are then placed to isolate the area from the external environment.
Incision
Small incisions are made through which the cannulas will be inserted.
Grease extraction
The cannula is inserted into the area to be treated. This cannula is connected to a vacuum suction pump that sucks out the fatty tissue.
Closing the incisions
Small stitches are made which are usually removed after a week; drains are placed whenever necessary to prevent fluid accumulation and minimise the risk of infection.
Recovery
Before being transported to recovery, a girdle is put on and worn for 30 to 45 days. The girdle will promote tissue retraction and a more comfortable recovery. The patient is woken up by the anaesthetist and then transported to the recovery room where they remain under medical observation until they are discharged.
Preparation for a Lipo
Before surgery
- Carry out all the preoperative tests requested by the medical team and send them in as early as possible.
- Don't smoke in the month before and the month after surgery. Smokers have a higher risk of complications, particularly healing difficulties.

- Support for transport home from the clinic, you cannot go alone or drive. She must be accompanied at all times during the first 48 hours.
- All social and professional activities should be scheduled to ensure complete rest in the days following surgery.
Post-surgery
- The recovery period depends on the extent/combination of procedures, but also varies from person to person.
- You may feel discomfort or moderate pain. Rest and prescribed medication will help relieve these symptoms.
- Take short walks to promote circulation.
- Avoid any kind of exertion for the first 8 days.
- Drink plenty of water.

Benefits Surgery
Better body contouringThis surgery improves body contour and proportion. By eliminating localised fat in problem areas such as the abdomen, flanks, back, legs, arms, jowls and others, you will achieve a more attractive and rejuvenated body appearance;
Improved self-esteemPatients who have had liposuction and now feel satisfied and comfortable with their bodies report a significant improvement in their self-esteem. They also report an increased level of energy and enthusiasm in their daily lives;
Visible and long-lasting resultsThe best way to get rid of “stubborn” fat : a balanced diet and exercise are not always enough to get rid of “stubborn” fat. This procedure eliminates "resistant" fat deposits and, when combined with a healthy lifestyle, promises long-lasting results.

Frequently Asked Questions about
Liposuction / Liposculpture
Is liposuction a safe surgery?
Any surgery has potential risks and complications. However, this is a safe surgery as long as it is carried out in an accredited clinic and by a plastic surgeon with extensive experience in liposuction and body contouring surgery. It is equally important to have preoperative examinations carried out and to follow all pre- and post-operative care to the letter. All risks and complications will be explained in detail at your medical consultation.
How much does liposuction cost in Lisbon (Portugal) in 2024?
The price of liposuction, whether carried out in Lisbon, Porto or another geographical area, varies from patient to patient and depends on several factors: - Complexity of the surgery; - Combination of procedures; - Number of areas to be treated; - Amount of fat to be removed.
The exact value of your liposuction is confirmed after the diagnostic medical consultation.
How many areas can be treated at the same time?
Generally, three to four areas can be treated in a single operation. However, there is a fat limit and a surgical time limit that must be respected for the patient's safety. In some cases, a second operation may be necessary.
Can I combine liposuction with other procedures?
This procedure can be carried out on its own or combined with other procedures. The most commonly combined procedures are abdominoplasty and buttock augmentation/remodelling.
How many litres of fat can be removed in one procedure?
The fat limit is around 5 litres. More important than the amount of fat is the number of areas that can be treated safely for the patient.
What are the limitations of lipo?
This surgery is not a slimming method and will not provide good results in patients who are overweight or have sagging skin. The best results are achieved in patients with good muscle tone, elasticity and without excessive fat deposits. When the skin is sagging, additional procedures may be necessary to achieve good results (e.g. abdominoplasty, thigh lift, arm lift, etc).
At what age can I have liposuction?
Technically, this surgery can be carried out on any patient who has an indication for it, who is mature and has realistic expectations, and who is in good general health. One of the most important aspects to consider is the elasticity of the skin, which increases with age. In these cases, alternative procedures may be recommended to achieve good results.
Should liposuction be done before or after having children?
Because this surgery is more suitable for skin with good elasticity, it may be better to carry it out before pregnancy. However, if you are thinking of having children in the short term, it would be more prudent to wait and reassess the state of your body after becoming a mum. Each case is different and our medical team will advise you on the treatment best suited to your needs.
Does liposculpture cause sagging?
Liposculpture does not cause sagging. When the surgery is performed on patients with firm, elastic skin, the tissues are able to readjust to the new body contour. When there is already sagging skin, eliminating fat in this area can accentuate this sagging since it has no retraction capacity.
I'm in the process of losing weight. Can I have the surgery now?
If you're in the process of losing weight, it's advisable to wait until you've reached your desired weight. Only then will you be able to assess the real state of your body and skin and decide which procedures are most appropriate.
Is the result of liposuction permanent?
No surgery guarantees results for life. The success of this procedure and the long-term results depend on the care you take of your body and your lifestyle after surgery - a balanced diet and regular exercise are recommended.
Are the results visible immediately after surgery?
Soon after surgery, you may notice differences. However, post-operative oedema distorts the result. After a month you can already see significant changes, but the final result is expected six to twelve months after the operation.
What are the risks and complications of liposuction?
This is a safe surgery but, like any surgical procedure, it is not without risks and complications. The most common complications are: infection, delayed or unsightly healing, changes in skin sensitivity, contour irregularities, asymmetry, etc. Our medical team will do their best to achieve a good result and if they consider the risk of complications for your specific case to be high, they will advise other treatment options.
Is the post-operative period painful?
Post-operative discomfort depends on the extent of the liposuction and the combination of procedures. You can expect to feel discomfort and moderate pain in the days following surgery, which is easily relieved with the prescribed painkillers.
Are drains used?
Drains are used whenever necessary after surgery to prevent fluid accumulation and reduce the risk of complications.
When can I return to work and sport?
Depending on the extent of the liposuction, you can return to work between 3 and 7 days after surgery (for sedentary professions). It's important to note that each case is different and recovery can be slower or faster in different patients. Activities that involve physical effort, such as sports, can only be resumed gradually after a month.
When can I travel?
You can travel after 3 to 7 days if your recovery is going as expected. If you live abroad and wish to have your liposuction in Portugal, it's important to allow the necessary number of days to recover before returning to your country of residence. We have a specialised team that will give you the support you need to carry out your surgery in Portugal safely.
Can lipo be carried out on areas of the body other than those commonly mentioned, such as the abdomen and thighs?
Many patients have doubts about the areas of the body where liposuction can be performed. It is possible to perform this procedure on several less common areas of the body, such as the arms, back, ankles, jowls, among others.
How does lipo affect loose or sagging skin after fat removal?
The issue of sagging skin after liposuction is a cause for concern for many patients. The truth is that liposuction can affect the elasticity of the skin and, depending on the patient's initial physical state, it may be necessary to carry out combined surgery to treat sagging or excess skin. A very common surgical combination is Lipoabdominoplasty, which combines liposuction with abdominoplasty in a single operation, making it possible not only to remove excess fat but also to correct sagging and remove excess skin in the abdomen area.
How can the excess fat removed be used?
The aspirated fat can be used to fill out other areas of the body that may lack volume, such as the buttocks (the so-called Brazilian Butt Lift), the breasts or the face, depending on the patient's objectives.
Are there any treatments or procedures that can be combined with lipo for even better results?
It can be combined with other surgical procedures, such as abdominoplasty or breast augmentation, to achieve more comprehensive results. In these cases, more than one procedure is combined in a single intervention, which can be very beneficial for patients who want to improve several areas of the body at once.
Are there financing options or payment plans available to pay for liposuction?
Having financing options to help patients manage the cost of surgery is often a crucial factor when choosing a plastic surgeon and the clinic where liposuction is performed. At LMR, we have payment facilities to make it easier to pay for liposculpture surgery. Patients should be aware of the payment policies and requirements associated with these options at their initial consultation so that they can make informed decisions about financing their liposuction. For more information on payment facilities, please contact us using the contact form or by email - geral@lmrcirurgiaplastica.pt.
Can lipo be used to lose weight or is it just for body remodelling?
Liposuction is not a solution for significant weight loss, but rather a body remodelling procedure. It is most effective for eliminating localised fat deposits that don't respond well to diet and exercise. Ideally, it is performed on patients with a normal, stable weight and a healthy lifestyle.
Can liposuction be performed on patients with sagging or ageing skin?
This procedure should not be carried out in areas where the skin is very saggy. In these areas, removing fat can increase sagging, accentuate excess skin and carries a high risk of irregularities. In these cases, it may be advisable to combine liposuction with a procedure that improves sagging, such as abdominoplasty (in the case of the abdomen), brachioplasty (in the arms) or cruroplasty (in the thighs).
What are the non-invasive liposuction options for those who can't have surgery?
There are non-invasive alternatives, such as cryolipolysis (CoolSculpting), which are fat reduction options without surgery. Although these methods don't remove as much fat as traditional liposuction, they can be effective for those looking for a faster, more economical treatment without the need for surgery, anaesthesia or recovery.
