What is a facelift?
Facelift or facelift, also known as rhytidectomy, Facelift is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin from the face, neck or both. It also has the function of repairing the structures beneath the skin to improve the appearance and contour of the face. Thus, the facelift removes excess skin from the face and neck, improves the appearance of some wrinkles and provides a more defined facial contour.
At LMR, we use the deep plane facelift, This method not only removes excess skin, but also repositions the deeper layers of facial muscles and tissues. This method provides a more natural and, above all, long-lasting result, reducing the appearance of sagging skin and deep wrinkles and distributing facial volume in a more youthful way. The procedure can offer a transformative effect on the middle and lower part of the face.
Who it's for
the facelift?
Good candidates for a deep plane facelift usually have some of the following characteristics:
- Excess skin and sagging on the face and/or neck;
- Excess skin and deep wrinkles at the bottom and top of the eyes;
- Loss of volume in some areas, such as the cheekbones;
- Very pronounced nasolabial folds;
- Good health;
- Non-smoking;
- Mentally stable patients with realistic expectations about the results of surgery.
Types Lifting
Cervicofacial Lift (Face and Neck)
The cervicofacial facelift aims to improve the appearance of the face as a whole (face and neck). It treats the following signs of ageing: excess skin on the face and neck, pronounced nasolabial folds, loss of volume and contour in the malar region and jaw, localised fat and folds in the neck area.
Neck Lift
The neck lift aims to treat the sagging and aged appearance of the neck (“turkey neck”, “jowls”, or “neck skin”). It can be performed alone or combined with a facelift. A neck lift involves removing excess skin and fat and repairing the platysma muscle of the neck.
Frontal lift (forehead and eyebrows)
The frontal lift aims to improve the appearance of localised wrinkles in the frontal region and lift drooping eyebrows. It is often combined with blepharoplasty to achieve a more rejuvenated and open look.

Your facelift consultation
1. Counselling
This is the first step in your facelift consultation, sharing with the plastic surgeon your complaints, your expectations of the surgery and the degree of rejuvenation you want to achieve;
2. Treatment plan
Depending on the initial state of the face and the desired result, a treatment plan will be outlined for a rejuvenated and natural appearance;
3. Detailed explanation
During the consultation, all the risks of the facelift will also be explained, as well as pre- and post-operative care;
4. Budget
After the medical diagnosis, you will be presented with an exact facelift quote according to the surgical plan that has been drawn up and you will be able to book your surgery date. The price of a facelift depends on the initial state of the face, the complexity of the intervention and the combination of procedures.
What results can I expect
after a deep plane facelift?
A face and/or neck lift will give you a more rejuvenated and rested appearance without compromising on naturalness. The result of a facelift is long-lasting, but it's important to realise that no surgery stops the natural ageing process, since as we continue to age, the sagging of the skin and the relaxation of the structures continues to occur. Obviously, you will start from a better place and look better than if you hadn't had the surgery. Most patients who have a face or neck lift are satisfied with the results for at least 10 to 15 years.
The scars
facelift and neck lift
Advanced plastic surgery techniques allow scars to be well hidden (in natural creases and other hidden points whenever possible). As far as facelift scars are concerned, these will always depend on the type of facelift carried out and the technique in question. Usually the scars are located at one of the following points:
- On the front of the ear
- Behind the ear
- Top hairline
- Lower hairline behind the ear
- Under the chin - in the case of a neck lift.
Type of Anaesthesia
The facelift is usually performed under general anaesthesia. Sedation is administered intravenously and, when the patient is asleep, local anaesthetics are administered so that the patient doesn't feel pain throughout the surgical procedure.
The facelift step-by-step
Marking the standing patient:
Before administering the anaesthetic, markings are made (face and neck);
Sedation:
Sedation is administered intravenously by the anaesthetist who will be present throughout the surgery. Local anaesthetic is then injected into the area to be treated so that the patient does not feel any pain throughout the surgical procedure;
Disinfection and placement of surgical drapes:
The entire face and neck area is cleaned and disinfected to reduce the risk of infection. Operating drapes are placed to isolate the area to be treated from the external environment;
Incisions:
Depending on the type of facelift, incisions are made at strategic points on the face and neck;
The facelift:
The deep structures of the face and neck are repositioned. Excess skin is removed and attached to the new structure to produce a rejuvenated appearance and a more defined contour;
Closing the incisions:
The incisions are usually closed with sutures which are removed after 7/10 days;
Band:
At the end of the surgery, a face band is fitted;
Recovery:
The patient is woken up by the anaesthetist and then transported to the recovery room where they remain under observation until they are discharged, either after a few hours or the next day.
Preparation for Lifting
Before the surgery:
- Carry out all the prescribed medical examinations and submit them at least one month in advance;
- Do not take aspirin, anti-inflammatories or anticoagulant medication two weeks before the facelift. You should inform the medical team of any medication you take or any medical condition you suffer from;
- Do not take slimming medication one month before surgery;
- Do not smoke one month before surgery and while the healing process is underway. Smoking compromises tissue oxygenation and can make healing more difficult;
- If you catch a cold or suffer from a bad mood in the days before the facelift, you should inform the medical team immediately;
- Read all the documentation you've been given carefully as you may have questions before the day of the surgery;
- Organise your routines in advance so that you can recover calmly;
- If you still have doubts about the facelift, don't wait until the day of the surgery and ask all your questions first.
On the day of surgery:
- The day before, eat light meals that don't cause indigestion. Fast for 8 hours - do not eat or drink liquids, including water;
- The day before and the day of surgery, shower with the prescribed antiseptic gel to prevent infection;
- No jewellery or watches, no make-up or hand polish/gel;
- Do not wear contact lenses;
- Bring comfortable clothes to wear when you are discharged - preferably with buttons or zips;
- After discharge, you cannot go home alone or drive. If you don't have someone to accompany you home, you must inform us in advance. You must be accompanied for at least 48 hours;
- Bring sunglasses to wear when you are discharged and during your recovery period;
Recovery and post-operative care:
- You may feel discomfort and moderate pain for 2 or 3 days. Rest and prescribed medication help relieve these symptoms;
- Rest and avoid any kind of exertion for the first 8 days;
- Do not drive for 8 days;
- No smoking;
- Do not expose yourself to the sun and wear sunglasses to protect your eyesight;
- At home, you shouldn't always lie down or be in the same position. You should get up and take small steps at least every two hours;
- Sleep with your head on a high pillow;
- Apply ice with constant renewal to the cheeks for the first 24 hours to avoid too much oedema;
- Attend all post-operative appointments;
- Drink plenty of water and eat a balanced diet;
- You can return to work after 2-3 weeks.
Benefits Lifting
Repositions facial muscles
The underlying structures of the face, also known as the superficial musculo-aponeurotic system (SMAS), tend to weaken over the years. Before removing excess skin, the facial structures will be repositioned so that the skin is under less tension and the result of the facelift is more natural and long-lasting.
Eliminates excess skin
Sagging and excess skin is carefully removed and the rest is positioned over the new facial structure. The skin is not stretched, but rather adapted in a natural way to the contours of the face so as not to leave an artificial, “pulled” result.
Improves the natural contours of the face
The facelift lifts the face, considerably improves creases and restores facial contours such as the jawline and malar region. The facelift is often combined with fat grafting or other fillers to restore lost volume in certain areas of the face.

Frequently Asked Questions about
Facelift / Neck Lift
Is the facelift a safe surgery?
Any surgical procedure has associated risks and a facelift is no exception. Facelifts and neck lifts require a high degree of experience, specialisation and precision. For the surgery to be carried out safely, it is of the utmost importance to choose a reconstructive and aesthetic plastic surgeon who is registered with the Portuguese Medical Association and has several years' proven experience in carrying out facelifts and facial surgeries.
What is the price of a facelift (Lisbon or Porto)?
The price of a facelift depends on the initial condition of the skin, the complexity of the surgery and the combination of procedures. The facelift is often combined with other surgeries and non-invasive treatments - blepharoplasty, brow lift, fat grafting, fillers, wrinkle treatment with toxin, CO2 laser and peels. The exact cost of the facelift, whether carried out in Lisbon or Porto, will be confirmed on the day of the consultation after the medical diagnosis.
What anaesthetic is used?
The anaesthetic administered depends on the type of facelift and the combination of procedures. Generally, a facelift is performed under sedation and local anaesthesia.
What is the ideal age for a facelift?
The ageing process differs from patient to patient and is influenced by intrinsic and extrinsic factors that affect the appearance of the face. There is no specific age at which lifting, However, surgery is indicated when there are visible and bothersome changes to the face, without allowing ageing to become too pronounced (usually at the age of 50/55). The sooner the surgery is carried out, the less invasive it will be and the more natural the result will be.
Are there non-surgical alternatives to a face lift?
Fillers with fat or other anti-aging substances can restore lost volume - dark circles, cheekbones, nasolabial folds, the peribuccal area, etc. However, these treatments don't provide such striking and long-lasting results. They restore some lost volume and improve facial contour, but they don't eliminate excess skin or reposition facial muscles and structures.
Does the facelift treat wrinkles?
A facelift removes excess skin and repositions facial structures, but it is not a wrinkle treatment. It can improve the appearance of nasolabial folds but does not treat wrinkles caused by muscle contraction, such as crow's feet, the “bar code” or forehead wrinkles, etc. To improve the appearance of fine, creased wrinkles, facelifts can be combined with other treatments such as toxins, fillers, peels and CO2 lasers.
Is the result of the facelift artificial?
The aim of a facelift is to achieve a rejuvenated appearance without altering each person's natural features. A natural result is achieved by repositioning the deep structures of the face (fat and muscle structures) and eliminating excess skin. This approach restores lost contour and harmony to the face, without the “stretched skin” effect.
How old can I rejuvenate with a facelift?
Many patients look 10 years younger after a facelift, but the appearance of the face after surgery will depend essentially on the genetic characteristics and care of each person.
What is the recovery time and when can I return to work?
As a rule, recovery takes 2 to 3 weeks, but it also depends on the combination of procedures. You can use make-up to disguise any bruising you may still have from the second week onwards.
How painful is the post-operative period?
In the post-operative period there may be some discomfort due to oedema, but pain is not expected. Swelling, bruising, numbness and tension may occur, but these are transitory symptoms that usually disappear after 3 weeks.
Can I have a facelift in summer?
Facelifts can be carried out at any time of the year, the important thing is to choose a time of year when you can recover calmly. It's important to realise that you won't be able to expose yourself directly to the sun for at least a month. If you're planning a beach holiday, it's more prudent to have the surgery in the autumn or winter months.
Do the scars disappear?
Depending on the type of facelift carried out, scars can be located against the ear, the hairline or both. If they are located in transition zones, the scars are easy to disguise. With the passage of time, they become thinner and lighter and harder to identify. During the first three months, they tend to become redder and more sensitive. It's important to follow your doctor's recommendations to speed up the healing process and achieve more discreet scars. After the first three months, the scar will improve in appearance and the final result should be achieved 12 to 18 months after surgery.
Is the result of the facelift permanent?
We can say that the results of a facelift are definitive, i.e. they don't require periodic maintenance, as is the case with fillers, for example, which last for 9/12 months and you have to repeat the treatment to maintain the result. However, it's important to note that there are no surgeries that guarantee results for life or that stop the natural ageing process. After a facelift, your skin will continue to age naturally and, after a few years, you may notice that your skin is sagging again. However, if you hadn't had the facelift, this sagging would be more pronounced. On average, a facelift patient is satisfied with the result for at least 10 to 15 years.
What are the risks of surgery and anaesthesia?
All surgical and anaesthetic procedures are associated with a certain risk of complications. Although most patients don't suffer complications, you should talk to your plastic surgeon to make sure you understand all the risks and potential complications of the facelift. Some facelift risks include: Reaction to anaesthesia, infection, haematoma or seroma, bleeding, changes in skin sensitivity, unsightly or delayed healing, asymmetry, sensation of numbness and allergic reactions.
Are there financing options or payment plans available to pay for a Facelift?
